Patient’s friends and familes ripped off at ERI

To phone Australia from Edinburgh it costs 22p a minute using the very expensive BT phone plan. However, if you have a friend or member of your family in Hospital in Edinburgh it will cost you 49p a minute to call them. Patients who make outgoing calls from the hospital have to pay £3 for a 30-minute call, six times the cost of a similar call using a BT payphone.

Independent Lothians MSP Margo MacDonald said: “I think there should be an investigation into this because it looks to me like someone is making too much money out of people when they are vulnerable.”

Grant Archibald, deputy chief executive of NHS Lothian University Hospitals Division, said: “it is entirely up to patients if they use this service.” Of course, they can just stay lonely whilst they are at their most vulnerable and sick.
