The Scotsman has a front page story today which echos our article “Hearts fans shame Edinburgh around the world” on 11th April .
Key quote
“Booing the deceased Pope is disgustingly mean-spirited and ugly. The weekend’s outbursts didn’t reveal a rift between Catholics and Protestants as much as they revealed the difference between decency and disrespect” - Times-Picayune, New Orleans newspaper
As we pointed out in our original story, the sad behaviour of Hearts supporters has been reported in well over 100 publications around the world. VisitScotland, a body I am not too happy about at the best of times, have this time got it right. With the advent of instant global communications, Scotland’s and indeed Edinburgh’s reputation has been tarnished by the events last weekend. What adds insult to injury in this situation is that the Hearts’ supporters organisations have refused to come out strongly against this behaviour.
McConnell, our dodgy first minister, gives half a quote “Whatever happened, and I didn’t see the incident or hear it, is not reflective of Scotland as a whole,” he said. The part he missed out is it is reflective of Scottish football and all his press releases and photo ops have not, and probably will not, change the situation. It is time to take much more stronger action against the clubs.
People sitting at home can start to boycott advertisers who advertise at Tynecastle and on the Hearts web site - all:sports, Reebok and all the others. Then tell the company that you are boycotting them and why.
