Is the Lord Provost anti-semitic? It certainly looks like it and that is the question being asked in the City’s Jewish community today following an article in the Sunday Mail.
It seems Lesley Hinds, our female Lord Provost has written to to the Chief Rabbi Dr Jonathan Sacks telling him she won’t go to a synagogue. She says she disapproves of the orthodox Jewish policy of forcing men and women to worship apart.
However, she has made the senseless decision that she is happy to go to Musilim events where women are treated similarly. Surley this has nothing to do with the fact that there are a lot of muslims who vote in Edinburgh.
Provost Hinds has refused to go to several Jewish events in recent months and asked her deputy, councillor Steve Cardownie, to go in her place. But in the same time, she has attended several events organised by leaders of the city’s Muslim community. She is also a director and former chairwoman of the city’s Mela festival, which is organised by Muslim leaders.
This story not only affects the Lord Provost, this affects the whole council administration who seem to be backing her anti-semitism including Deputy Lord Provost, Steve Cardownie.
If this nightmare scenario had come out before Hinds went to New York for Tartan Day recently there would have been demonstrations at every event she attended in New York. This will affect not only Edinburgh, but Scotland throughout the world.
