Controversial labour MSP Gordon Jackson has a lot of explaining to do. Scotland on Sunday has carried out an investigation into the part-time MSP and full-time Queens Council (QC).
The investigation established at least nine cases where as QC he picked up lucrative fees in court while billing the parliament for car or train travel from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
On two occasions, Jackson – who earns £264,000 a year in legal aid plus a £50,000 MSP’s salary – is recorded as having missed parliamentary committee meetings.
On a third occasion the parliament was not even in session, although Jackson insists he has never made travel claims without at least going to his parliamentary office – something that would be within the rules.
Using freedom of information laws, Scotland on Sunday also asked the Scottish Legal Aid Board to provide details of Jackson’s individual legal aid claims. However, the SLAB claimed this would breach confidentiality and denied the request.
