Councillor Trevor Davis, Planning Convener of the council planning department attacked honest shopkeepers a few days ago for complaining, in the same way that most of the city is in a letter published in the Evening News for complaining, in the same way that most of the city is, that the council planning department are making it harder for these small businesses to make money because of the lunacy of the planning regulations and the council’s constant abuse of the Development plan.
Thank goodness one of these people has the guts to reply to ‘Dodgy’ Davis who in fact makes some of his money through using his council position to win council contracts. Maybe if Dodgy Davis did not have the inside track on the high paying council jobs he might be affected by the lunacy of his committee.
These are the self-same shops that pay rates second only to central London and which finance large parts of the disruption put in place by him and his colleagues.Without the kind of shops that Mr Davies criticised, Edinburgh would be a very poor tourist destination indeed. Imagine retail was limited to the ubiquitous mix of chainstores and short-lease operations that our council has reduced Princes Street to.
Perhaps ‘Dodgy’ Davis should start supporting these people whose livlihoods depend on their shops and not on getting council contracts because you are a councillor.
