The city council can’t seem to get the postal voting system right. Although there is no evidence of voting fraud at the moment, there are double postal votes dropping through letterboxes in Edinburgh.
The council today claimed a “clerical error” had caused the problem and said postal votes which had been sent off with mismatching numbers would be rejected.
Pensioner George Hunter was surprised when a second ballot was delivered to his home at Orchard Bank, Comely Bank, on Friday.
He said: “At first I thought they’d made a mistake and given me two votes, but then I saw the letter saying they had had to reissue the papers.
“I posted my first vote off a few days ago and now I have to do it again.
“I’m not surprised that this has happened - with the council, if anything can go wrong, it does.”
The 77-year-old added: “It could confuse people, especially older people.
This may just be the tip of the iceberg. If anyone has a sniff of postal voting fraud, feel free to contact us.
