It appears that because the dopy leader of the city council doesn’t walk around Leith then their annual festival gets shafted when it comes down to handing out grants. The council had no problem spending at least eight million pounds on the referendum but have problems granting the £10,000 that the long-standing local festival asked for. They even slashed 50% off what the festival got last year.
The festival which has grown it’s program from 24 events in 2002 to over 110 for this upcoming festival taking place at about 60 venues has berated the council for it’s lack of support.
They have compared the funding offered to the Leith Festival to city centre events like the Fringe, which gets £53,000 from the council and the Edinburgh International Festival, which had to be bailed out with an extra £300,000 from the council earlier this year, even though the event is funded to the tune of more than £1 million from the local authority.
Sandy Campbell, chair of Leith Festival’s organising committee, said: “It feels like an insult to be offered only £2500 from our own council when millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money is spent on the city centre festivals.”
Run by 12 volunteers, the festival was only minimally backed by their slimy local councillor Gordon Munro when he said “I’ll be making a recommendation on their behalf”. This idiot is their elected representative and he should be shouting and screaming about this.
