Bedrooms smelling of urine, dietary demands being ignored and no fire drills. This is how the city council is treating the most vulnerable in Council run care homes - this is happening now whilst you are reading this.
Today comes the shocking news from the Care Commission after 31 inspections showed that two-thirds of council-owned care homes are failing to meet national standards.
A whole range of problems was identified, including instances where the “dignity, privacy and emotional wellbeing of the residents may be compromised”. The inspections, which were unannounced, found problems with pensioners sharing rooms and staff being unaware of dietary requirements. In several cases, employees were failing to record details of medicines and there were no policies on restraint.
The Care Commission also listed problems with the buildings, including the smell of urine in rooms and inadequate lighting.
Every single councillor in Edinburgh should be ashamed of this and should be considering their future. Kate MacKenzie has proved herself stupid beyond belief when she stated:
“There seems to be an awful lot of urgent requirements in these Care Commission inspections. If staff feel they are under pressure they should speak to the department and express their concerns. I’m particularly concerned some homes don’t have nutrition plans for residents.”
No Kate, it is your bloody job to make sure that these homes are run correctly. I am without doubt that the staff of these homes either complain regularly or have not complained because people like you, on your bloody high horse, don’t actually give a damn.
