Scottish Government

Executive screws Scotland’s working poor

Thousands of potential Scottish homebuyers will have been hoping that there was some hope of buying a house when the chancellor announced his plans yesterday to extend shared-equity schemes and allow savings of hundreds of pounds a month.

It is not often that the Government comes up with something that actually helps the citizens and not themselves so this is particularly galling. The types of people this will be affecting are some of the most needed occupations in the country including nurses, firefighters, teachers and bus drivers.

The decision comes days after a report by Halifax Bank of Scotland revealed that key public sector workers, such as nurses, teachers and firefighters, were struggling to buy homes in Scotland’s property hot spots, with house prices outstripping salary increases.

The Executive and the First Minister’s spokesman had the balls to say that “Basically, this won’t apply because we have our own scheme in Scotland.” What they forgot to mention is that it only affects about 1,000 people whereby the new initiative could help about 10,000.

Once again the people most in need are those who get screwed.
