So, one third of MSPs are using their allowances to buy a nice nest-egg home in the City just like their Westminster colleagues do in London. That is a wad of your cash every year making them a good return for retirement.
Permatanned SSP former leader Tommy Sheridan has written to the Presiding Officer to get it sorted out to his satisfaction:
He said: “I am informed that 48 MSPs have, since 1999, used this allowance to pay interest on mortgages to purchase private properties for their own personal use, thus facilitating a substantial financial gain.
“I ask you to instigate an urgent re-think of the Edinburgh accommodation allowance scheme. Surely it was not envisaged that it would be used to facilitate nest eggs of £50,000, £100,000, or more for individual MSPs whose only requirement is to live more than 90 minutes’ travel distance from parliament.
“I consider this practice to be a political property racket that, although not illegal is unacceptable and immoral.
Sheridan has done his homework as well and came up with figures which show that the MSPs could rent a two bedroomed flat just 15 minutes from parliament where they would save the taxpayer almost £4000. Good point!
