Today’s newspapers brings the news that the government are using the lottery money and planning to divert lottery cash from good causes and charity to fund services normally paid for from general taxation under the well-known guise of streamlining.
“The whole aim when the lottery was set up was that it was going to be independent of government. Now what we are going to see from this Government is, by stealth, is it increasing the amount it is taking and it directs how it should be spent. That’s not what the lottery is for.”
Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, said that recent years had seen rising proportions of lottery cash going on health and education programmes, such as MRI scanners, fruit in schools and improvements to school dinners following Jamie Oliver’s campaign.
All MPs should be ashamed if they vote for this bill.
