Councils failing children

Even our dodgy First Minister, Jack McConnell is up in arms at council social work departments. He was addressing the centenary conference of children’s charity Barnardo’s Scotland in Edinburgh and McConnell said council leaders now had to focus their attention on meeting the needs of the 12,000 children in local authority care.

He said: “I for one am not prepared to stand by and watch thousands of our children fail because those who are responsible do not have high enough ambitions for them.

“I am committed to improving the educational opportunities of these youngsters who are in the care of local and national government.

Although Edinburgh’s isn’t mentioned by name in the article linked below, EdinburghSucks!com have been receiving information on just how bad the social work department in Edinburgh is and we will be publishing information when sources can be confirmed.

Research last year showed 60 per cent of children who leave care at 16 do not achieve any qualifications at foundation level Standard Grade - compared to less than ten per cent for Scotland as a whole.
