Health & Safety Executive

Human Guinea-Pig Tests

An Edinburgh laboratory has been criticised by an influential US senator for intentionally exposing volunteers to harmful pesticides.

Inveresk laboratories was named along with other testing facilities in a new American report, which found a pattern of ethical breaches in the way such experiments were carried out.

One of the casualties of the experiments Bruce Turnbull who hails from Leith, was one of 50 subjects tested with the harmful pesticide azinphos-methyl in 1998 at the lab and believes he has suffered long-term health problems because of the test, which he was told at the time “would help farmers. He received no follow-up medical checks.

Senator Boxter said:

“I want to start a debate in every country where these tests are carried out and bring an end to this kind of testing. The report reiterates flaws across the studies, stating: “[the report] finds that the studies have serious ethical problems, including experimental designs that caused adverse health effects or put human subjects at risk, lack of informed consent, impermissible waivers of liability, scientific invalidity, systematic dismissal of adverse events as unrelated to the chemicals being tested and lack of long-term monitoring.

All this comes out in America and the hugely funded Health and Safety Executive are silent on this human guinea-pig tests.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said : “HSE did not receive a post-trial report; HSE has not reviewed the study; we do not know if a report was ever sent to any other department or agency.â€? – So that’s all right then.
