The current administration have been in power in Edinburgh for 20 years and now a report tells us the shocking news that 92 of our schools are unsuitable for use. How could the council have let this happened?
Yesterday, Teflon Don Anderson told us that the big news is that he would like to see school uniforms to sort out all the Education problems, an obvious piece of SPIN because of this damning report. (click here for details).
A total of 92 schools have defects so serious that they are deemed unsuitable for use – including 64 which are rated as being close to the point where they will need to be closed or massively overhauled.
The dire state of the city’s schools has come about despite a multi-million investment in revamping dozens of school buildings.
Of course all the councillors including Teflon Don Anderson, education leader andRev. Ewan ‘internet illiterate’ Aitken and the unelected member for Portobello and finance chief Maureen Child have kept their mouths shut regarding the report. Heads in the sand!
The statistics were collated by the Scottish Executive in December 2004, and published this week.
Surveyors based their decisions on the state of structures including roofs, windows, boilers, pipes, heating and chimneys. They also examined stairs and rooms such as kitchens and toilets. Out of Edinburgh’s 159 schools, 52 were given the worst rating of being bad, meaning that they will soon be unfit for the purpose they are supposed to serve.
A total of 39 were classed as having major defects which would need urgent attention in the near future. And 69 were in either a good or satisfactory condition.
What a nightmare for the children of the city!

[...] It seems not only are the children suffering because the fabric of 96 of our schools are unsuitable for use (see here), but it also seems they are in danger when they are in the classrooms as well. 89 per cent of Scottish youngsters who use internet chatrooms would arrange to visit someone they had met – and that 22 per cent would do so without their parents’ knowledge. The UK average is 4 per cent. [...]
