It looks like the comrades in the SSP are going to use today’s Make Poverty History march in the city today to gather cash for their own party totally abusing the reason for the march which is expected to be the biggest in Edinburgh’s history.
An e-mail to party supporters from Allison Kane, the SSP’s national treasurer, said they planned to fund raise for the four MSPs who will be suspended from Holyrood for a month in September after their protest in the parliament chamber on Thursday.
Although the SSP is threatening to take the parliament to court, claiming that the MSPs and their staff have been denied a fair hearing, Ms Kane says that they need to begin fund-raising for the £25,000 it will cost the four politicians and their aides.
Her e-mail states that “the bottom line comrades is that we have to prepare for the worst case scenario”. She says that an immediate appeal will be launched in their Voice newspaper, “plus we will start collections over the weekend at G8 and all our interventions”.
Some questions:
It must be illegal for this to happen. Is there not something that can be done to stop these people from collecting money from peopel who may not know where it goes.
According to the recent election figures, this party is fast losing it’s relevance with about a 50% cut in the number of votes it received.
Later an anonymous spokesman for the party denied that they would be collecting - but why is their party treasurer not following that line?
