Pensioners ignored by Council - yet again!

Failing the OAPs again! The city’s pensioners are being ignored by the City’s councillors yet again and their safety is being put in danger.

Mary Cunningham, 90, fell in February and has complained of a sore back ever since.

Since then Irene Ross, 85, has fallen and Normina McLeod, 85, tripped two weeks ago.

Jane Groat, a 76 year-old, began complaining to the council in 2003, but said that the pavement - at the bus stop outside 18 Lauder Road - has been in poor condition since at least 1997.

She even got her then MSP Angus McKay involved and was assured it would be repaired.

Mrs Groat received notification from then MSP Angus MacKay, enclosing a council letter in reply to his concerns. It was signed on behalf of city development director Andrew Holmes and dated March 31, 2003.

The letter said: “Following an inspection of the west side footway of Lauder Road between Dick Place and Grange Loan it was noted that some sections were in need of attention, although it was not deemed to be dangerous.

“I will arrange for resurfacing of sections of this footpath to be carried out this financial year.”

Finally last month the holes were finally filled with tar. However:

June Matthews, warden at the shelter [sheltered housing complex], described the pavement as “full of holes”. She added it was “a disgrace to call it a repair”.

Once again Teflon Don Anderson and his cabinet have let down some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
