A new YouGov survey has shown that 98 per cent of Scots parents expect their children to use the internet this summer and the education chief for the city of Edinburgh and COSLA has openly admitted in the press and here at EdinburghSucks!com that he is internet illiterate. Regular readers will of course know we are speaking of the hippy Rev. Councillor Ewan Aitken.
Peter Robbins, of the campaign group the Internet Watch Foundation, said: “Many young people do not apply reasoned thinking skills to online content. Research has shown that, while awareness of risks is higher among parents, there still remains a lot of confusion about what to do about the risks.
“Parents need more practical advice and guidance in getting the most out of the internet.”
It seems not only are the children suffering because the fabric of 96 of our schools are unsuitable for use (see here), but it also seems they are in danger when they are in the classrooms as well.
89 per cent of Scottish youngsters who use internet chatrooms would arrange to visit someone they had met – and that 22 per cent would do so without their parents’ knowledge. The UK average is 4 per cent.
The only possible explanation for this is that our council is totally ‘illiterate’ new technology. Other than Aitken’s admitted illiteracy, there was also the case when the Council paid £880,000 for a logo and Inspiring Capital catchphrase and ‘forgot’ to get the domain name. We definitely need some real leadership in the Council.
