One expects so little from politicians these days. Intellectual ability, capacity to achieve stated aims, personal probity – all of these have gone flying out the window but why is former Lord Provost Eric ‘Teeth’ Milligan using his position on the licensing board to stand up for a convicted, serial theiving criminal?
The local constabulary gave their opinion to the licensing board:
Police chiefs at today’s meeting of the licensing board said that in their opinion the crime, which resulted in Wencker being jailed for two months, meant he was no longer a proper person to hold a licence.
Milligan, who is also convenor of the Lothian and Borders Police Board obviously disagreed with the police because he actually went out of his way to praise the jailbird.
He said: “We need to consider if we can really come to the conclusion that an individual who has served the city so well and is one of our leading restaurateurs has suddenly become someone we don’t trust to hold a licence.”
This former Lord Provost and convenor of the L & B Police Board is well known for his abuse of power with using police cars as his personal taxis to and from Ibrox together with other councillors, but he fails to support them when their opinion is obviously the most relevant opinion in granting licences.
Daniel Wencker, owner of the popular Daniel’s Bistro in Leith’s Commercial Quay for almost ten years, had faced losing his licence after being found guilty of buying £18,000 worth of stolen wine.
Councillor David Guest said the board should suspend the licence and would lose credibility in future if it did not. He is right – the licensing board has completely lost credibility – it is obvious that there are rules for Councillors (Deputy Provost) and their friends and rules for the rest of us. If anyone can give us proof of Milligan taking a bung for this, email us and we will publish.
