1 in 9 ‘living in poverty’

Craigmillar Henchman?A new study looking in to depravation in Scotland which was published yesterday found that more than 9,000 of the city’s residents are classed as living in Scotland’s most deprived areas.

The study found that in Edinburgh, 52,821 people were classed as income deprived – 11 per cent of the city’s total population.

And 24 areas of the city, with populations of around 750 people, were classed as being in the most deprived five per cent areas of Scotland.

The study, had been drawn up to help the Scottish Executive work out where to put funding to properly tackle social problems but it is strange that with all the studies done in the past that nobody knew this information. From what we can see from the study it is just the same old stuff, about the same areas and pretty much the same figures and conclusions.

Our esteemed Lord Provost, Councillor Lesley Hinds’ gave the following words of wisdom: “While Edinburgh has a strong economy, we are aware that there are also deprived areas.” She never mentioned what she was going to do about it, of course.

Misleading quote of the day came from David Walker who gave one of his positions, namely, secretary of Craigmillar Community Council:

Craigmillar was highlighted as the most deprived area in Edinburgh – the 19th most deprived in Scotland – and it was estimated that at least half of the people there were out of work.

David Walker, secretary of Craigmillar Community Council, said: “I can imagine Craigmillar will be fairly high up the list when it comes to low levels of income. The last analysis we saw put the average earnings of residents in Craigmillar at £10,000 a year, so we’re well aware of this problem.

“It is becoming increasingly difficult for families on low income to take that step up.”

What Walker forgot to mention is that he is also in charge of Craigmillar’s Capacity Building Project. He and his cabal have been making a good living for years from his poverty-stricken constituents.

Walker is known locally as the henchman for disgraced ex-councillor Paul Nolan and the Craigmillar Cabal who seem to spend their time trying to make it as hard as possible for the members of the community to know what the Cabal are spending the Community’s money on. Numerous members of the Craigmillar Community Council and the Craigmillar Cabal are widely known throughout the area and indeed the corrodors of power at the City Chambers to be as bent as a u-turn. Walker is also bragging around the area that he is going to be the next Labour candidate for the area in the 2007 council elections.
