City Council

Where to shop? Try Glasgow

Thanks to our esteemed council, world famous Princes Street is dropping down the shoppers place to be seen in favour of … erm… Glasgow.

It appears that shoppers have had enough of the council enraging drivers by controversially changing a number of routes in the city centre, a scheme which many motorists and indeed the council leader Teflon Don Anderson himself, regard as hopelessly confusing.

Keith Aitken, a partner with GVA Grimley, said: “Edinburgh is now slipping down the rankings and the big change is that the out-of-town centres are able to command bigger rents.

“Edinburgh is being squeezed by Glasgow, Livingston, Braehead and Fort Kinnaird. A major issue is an under provision of car-parking which is compounded by a lack of understanding among the public of how the traffic patterns work.”

Princes Street lost its number one position in 2003 to Buchanan Street in Glasgow but has now been pushed into third place by the out-of-town Glashow shopping center Braehead. This is altogether more serious as the Evening News points out.

Of course city leaders were silent but our council spokesperson was on hand for a quote:

But a spokeswoman for the city council said: “The city has a raft of awards that indicate Edinburgh is a unique city for shoppers to visit. While we are looking at re-energising parts of the city that aren’t working commercially and architecturally, Edinburgh remains a fantastic place to shop.”

What a load of crap! Show us the money! The awards are nice, but if they don’t drive business then they are totally useless. The council are not re-energising the city center at all. They are closing it down to commerce.
