The Wit over at Leithal Wit (http://leithalwit.squarespace.com/) thought we may be interested to know the results of a wee FOI request – Edinburgh council is the 4th worst local authority in Scotland for parks judged by spend per person – and the worst city by a country mile. As The Wit says, this might be why all our suburban parks are nowt but dug toilets.
By this measure in the league table of Scottish local authorities the City of Edinburgh council comes fourth from the bottom. The city only manages to beat Eilean Siar (£1.07), Shetlands (£8.98p) and West Lothian (£14.99). Now, none of these local authorities compare at all to Edinburgh, so lets look at Edinburghs peer group. At the top of the league table in first place, it’s that dear green place Glasgow (£49.06), Dundee is fourth (£38.30) and Aberdeen is fifth (£35.18). In fact all of the predominantly urban areas of Scotland spend more than the Scottish average which is £28.24.
That’s right in Edinburgh, we’re spending about half as much as the Scottish average and less than a third of what Glasgow spends. No wonder our suburban green spaces are nothing but dog toilets, litter traps and hacked up shrubs.
Pop over to Leithal Wit (link above or below) he offers to supply the whole data set with anyone who asks for it. Howzat.
