Finally in 2006 the city’s Education leader is mentioning the Internet. Pupils are now to get information on how to stop preditors contacting them over the internet and what to do if they are contacted.
It was only on May 7th 2005 that Councillor Aitken told Linda Summerhayes of the Evening News that he was internet illiterate and his position was Education leader was called into question by EdinburghSucks.com.
Now in July 2006 he finally admits he has been sitting on his laurels all these years whilst the pupils of Edinburgh have been investing time on the Internet and he has finally caught up.
Councillor Ewan Aitken, the city’s education leader, said: “This is something that is desperately needed.
“The internet is how we will communicate in the future. We need people to use it responsibly and be able to discern between what is good and bad.
“We can’t hide from this, we must teach children to use it well and be very, very aware of the dangers. That’s why we need this policy.”
Hopefully Councillor Aitken this is not too little too late. FYI, the internet is how your pupils have been communicating for years and will continue to communicate in the future – so you still haven’t go it, have you? The children could teach you how to use it, the main thing they need is to be aware of the dangers. Hopefully, if you can figure them out – you can maybe pass that info on.
Maybe if you had a head of strategy that wasn’t spending all his time bullying, lying, deceiving and committing fraud this would have been sorted years ago.
