City Council

No smoke without fire

From 8th August

How can this Edinburgh council be serious. They are now checking the photograps in the local newspapers to find out if people are smoking in illegal places - is this really what the smoking ban is all about.

The recent story to hit the headlines coming out of the Assembly Rooms about publicity seeking Mel Smith smoking before, during or after his performance has become a performance on it’s own.

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh City Council said that although his head and upper body were outside of the window, leaning out of a room where smoking is forbidden would not technically get around the ban - which prohibits smoking in enclosed public places.

She said: “It has been drawn to our attention that this incident happened yesterday and we will have to consider whether we will take any action about it. We will be looking into it.”

Can our elected representatives not get our council spokeswoman to sort out problems more troubling to the city than Mel Smith having a puff out of the window?

Then the next day for the spokeswoman to come out with:

“Having considered Mel Smith’s smoking out of the window, it appears to us to be a theatrical gesture rather than a deliberate flouting of the law so, in the spirit of the Festival, we have decided to take no further action.”

just makes the whole thing a bloody joke. With all these spokesperson(s) spouting after the meetings they had at the council taxpayers expense it is no wonder that the fraud, bungs and self-preservation continues without question in this council.
