With the second cancelling of the Hogmanay street party in 4 years and not a politician in sight.
Once again, whilst throughout the last day of 2006 all Edinburghers could see the worsening and fierce weather, Edinburgh’s politicians cowered in their drinking holes afraid to take the decision.
The whole scenario was expertly predicted in the Evening News’ comments by Thomas the Tank:
6. Thomas the Tank, Embra / 9:22am 29 Dec 2006
A sure sign that Embra Cooncil are getting worried - putting up Andrew Holmes, an official, to prepare for bad news - what a change from yesterday when ‘City tourism and culture leader Donald Anderson insisted there would only be a cancellation in the result of “extreme” weather conditions’(sic). Still, I’m confident the Cooncillors’ Junket will go ahead, whatever the weather
Athough the junket didn’t go ahead, Edinburgh were of course in the same position as they were the last time when the cancellation came WAAAAAAY too late. Liverpool, sensibly did it 2 days ago.
The silent screams from our city leaders Aitken, Anderson and Hinds have so far been unheard by the populace. Bad news, bury your head - typical.
