Eric Milligan

Now we know why Councillors kept silent at New Year

EricMilligan.jpgIn our last post, we mentioned that we were greeted with walls of silence from our elected representatives upon the hugely late cancellation of Edinburgh’s street party.

Now an impeccible source has given us some background on what at least one of our councillors was doing and why he wasn’t too bothered.

It seems that former Lord Provost Eric ‘Maroon Balloon’ Milligan and our convenor of the Police Board had some guests in tow for the evening and, of course, he was devastated at not being able to show off “the fair braw city” at Hogmanay.

So, undaunted, he made contact (pulled strings, promised promotion, made it worth while?) with a senior officer at the Fettes Event Control centre who managed to get Eric a late invite to the Marks and Spencer party at their place in Princes Street where, of course, he had an unrestricted view of Pete Irvine’s fireworks at the Castle which, of course, the voting public of Edinburgh were denied the chance to see.

They tell us the grub and refreshments were great, as one would expect, at Markie’s do.

Whatever anyone may say about Milligan, he knows more ways of conning, worming, blustering his way into a free do than anyone else we’ve heard of.

And nice that the polis are looking after the Convenor of the Board so well.  I wonder how he got home – let’s hope he never availed himself of the blue-light taxi again at our expense.

You really couldn’t make this up.

UPDATE

David sent us the following email on April 10th, 2007

Your article on the wherabouts of Eric Millegan on Hogmanay is complete bollocks.  He was in Boroughmuir’s Rugby Club at Meggetland – I know because I was talking to him.  Why are your comments switched off?

We stand behind our original post because as we informed David, it came from a reliable source whose information in the past has been 100% correct.

UPDATE 2

Hi,
Of course you  can believe whatever or whoever you like.   I know that Eric Milligan, Brian Fallen, their respective partners, myself  my partner and around 120 other club members and friends saw in the New Year at Boroughmuir Rugby Club.  We watched the fireworks display on television and through the clubhouse windows which look toward Corstorphine Hill. Numerous club members wished Eric (Boroughmuir’s Honorary President) a Happy New Year and spoke to him about the cancellation of the street cellebrations.   His party arrived in the clubhouse around ten to midnight.
If it is the case that your “100% correct” source can confirm that they did see Eric Milligan watch the fireworks display from the M&S building in Princes Street then we really need to let the science community know that human cloning was first carried out in the last century.  How else could you explain the Councillor’s ability to appear simultaneously at two different locations?

To which we replied:
Thanks again for the email.  What our source said was a call was made to get the invite.  “So, undaunted, he made contact (pulled strings, promised promotion, made it worth while?) with a senior officer at the Fettes Event Control centre who managed to get Eric a late invite to the Marks and Spencer party at their place in Princes Street”.

What we can’t confirm is whether he actually attended the M&S gig.  We made the assumption that if the call was made he would go.  It is obvious that our source was either in the Control Centre or was told by someone who was in the control centre – and we know which one it was.

In the interests of being open and transparent we will again update the post with your comments.

The IP address thing is just a feature of the Contact Form plug-in for Wordpress – nothing sinister.   We are really not in the business of  lying and have always given the same or greater prominence the the posts which we know later have been wrong – something we think our politicians should take our lead on.  I think it is 3 times where we have unwittingly published wrong information in the last 2 years or so.  There is information coming in on almost a daily basis which we don’t publish – which is typical for a blog like ours.

Again, thanks for taking the time to contact us.
