It what is seen as the first signs that Edinburgh’s Labour party are running scared of what is expected to be a record number of independent candidates standing in May’s elections, the first Labour candidate is now disguising his candidature as that of an independent.
Matthew Wilson is one of two Labour candidates standing for the three-member Leith ward in May’s elections – the first to be held under the Single Transferable Vote system.
But one leaflet being put through doors urges electors: “Vote Wilson – local teacher for local election” without mentioning any party. The imprint says: “Published by Matthew Wilson on behalf of Matthew Wilson.”
The only clue to his party affiliation comes in the last line, which spells the address wrong: “Printed at 78 Buccleugh Street, courtesy of Scottish Labour Party.”
It is not as though this teacher can even stand on his own qualifications as a teacher:
Apart from misspelling Buccleuch Street, the leaflet also misses out words – “I want our young people get off to the best start” – and includes grammatical errors – “Free fruit and fresh water for primary kids has been welcomed by Matthew”.
So what is happening here? is the Labour Party now taking all the failing teachers in Leith to become candidates for the council?
What should be happening is that Mr. Wilson get’s his arse back into the pupil’s seat and maybe get himself ready for the 2009 elections.
