Gilmore out! One down – more to come.

In one of only two ballots confirmed in the Lothians Former councillor Sheila Gilmore, who has already failed to bring in the sales of council houses in a referendum last year, has seen her hope of stealing more public money by becoming an MSP has seen those hopes dashed by David “Taxigate” McLetchie the sitting Tory.

With a 62% turnout in Edinburgh Pentlands, McLetchie doubled his majority in the election, while Gilmore saw the Labour percentage being slashed from 30.9 to 24.4% with the Scottish Nose Pickers had their percentage increased from from 16.8 to 24%.  We now have to move her into the “Former Politicians” category – good news!

The turnout was 62% and the spoiled papers number was huge at 1,528 – A lot of people (not us) are calling the electorate stupid because they can’t figure out how to vote but in this supposed to be the “posh” constituency where one would expect to find the intelligencia – and they have pretty much the same percentage of spoiled papers as completely working class areas.

There has to be something wrong here.

In the only other result in our region announced Labour’s Sarah Boyack was successful in holding Edinburgh Central with only a slight drop in percentage from 32.4 to 31.1%.  The SNP increased their vote from 17.7 to 25.5% – again a huge spoiled papers count of 1,501 – and 55.2 turnout.  The turnout was up 8.7%.

Currently Talk107 are running a poll on whether the election should be re-run with 76% voting for a re-run.  This number will probably change throughout the day but unfortunately Talk107 don’t give the number of voters to enable us to further guage what that actually means.
