It transpired on television last night that six of the eight crèches in Edinburgh would be closing forthwith without any consultation at all. So much for the listening FibDem/SNP administration who are now showing that childcare in Edinburgh is in it’s biggest crisis in living memory.
EdSucks has received about 20 32 emails this morning concerning this from creche workers who first found out that they were being made redundant on the BBC’s Reporting Scotland. We understand that some members of staff were telephoned yesterday with the news. That’s our caring council and their web of council-owned companies for you.
The six crèches marked for closure are Portobello, Leith Victoria, Craiglockhart, Drumbrae, Kirkliston and Gracemount. The two that are remaining open are Ainslie Park and the Royal Commonwealth Pool. Of course the Commonwealth Pool is closing for a couple of years for refurbishment so really they are closing 87.5% of creche places in the city.
The council department/company behind the closures is Edinburgh Leisure who continue to pour cash into the Ratho Climbing Centre which continues to make massive losses and currently spends between 12-14k each month just to empty their sceptic tank. Later this year, Edinburgh Leisure are also funding an all expenses paid Awards Dinner Dance where attenees are asked to “dress to impress” and are to be provided with free transport to and from the venue which is is the Ratho Climbing Centre.
Excellent work from the department who are willing to fund a free booze-up with transport included but tell the 18,500 children who use the crèche facilities each year to go and get fcuked. To make matters more of a farce, staff at the crèches who were told by telephone that their jobs were gone were also told not to speak about it publicly or they would have disciplinary action taken against them.
This will have knock on effects for the health service as well. At present a huge percentage of the users of the city’s crèches are mothers who suffer from the effects of post natal depression and are referred by their doctor.
Another nightmare for the city’s parents and children. First we had the primary schools closing then not closing. The secondary schools being rebuilt then not rebuilt now we have the creches closing. What the fcuk are these politicians playing at? Balanced the budget my arse - this is a huge imbalance.
This is so serious for the families of Edinburgh that we at EdSucks urge the Evening News to immediately throw their weight into a high profile campaign similar to the Sick Kids campaign to Save Edinburgh’s Crèches.

Does that work out at a massive 9.25 kids per creche per day, expensive provision
not sure if jambo jim is correct in his numbers but the creche at portobello is always full and you have to telephone a week in advance for a place most of the time.
the creche is a single room about 6×4 metres or smaller and is obviously well used. i’d join edinburghsucks campaign to keep them open.
nothing on Edinburgh Leisure website about the closings.
It does say…
“Our crèches welcome babies to pre school children. Booking is recommended since the service is popular and consistently recommended to others by our customers; many of whom return with their second, third and fourth child! You can book up to seven days in advance with one of our leisure cards.”
Is it not a parent’s responsibility to look after their children? Why do people keep moaning when facilities are closed or suspended?
“currently spends between 12-14k each month just to empty their sceptic tank”

Sceptic tank? Is that where they store people who are not entirely convinced that the Climbing Centre is a good place?
I bet “Non Parent” is a bloke. Only a guy could come out with something that stupid.
This post shows that nothing ever seems to change in this world - women and motherhood are still undervalued.
I’m glad that you made this story your main feature today, “Edinburgh Sucks”, but you could have included a wee bit more of a gender analysis. You wrote mainly about “parents” and “creche staff”, which are very gender neutral terms, given that the vast majority of people being shafted here are women.
I also bet that there’s not all that many women going to that bloody Ratho Climbing Centre.
This figure of 18,500 children can be used in a number of ways. Is it 18,500 individual children who it would be assumed visit the facilities more than once? Or is the 18,500 the total number of visits at 8 centres over a year?
If it is the latter jambojim’s maths aren’t too bad. (18,500 divided by 8 centres = 2313 divided by 50 weeks = 46.26 divided by 5 days = 9.252 children per creche per day).
[…] The Basa is concerned about the sudden decision of to close six of Edinburgh’s eight crèches without any consultation. […]
