This figure of 18,500 children can be used in a number of ways. Is it 18,500 individual children who it would be assumed visit the facilities more than once? Or is the 18,500 the total number of visits at 8 centres over a year?
If it is the latter jambojim’s maths aren’t too bad. (18,500 divided by 8 centres = 2313 divided by 50 weeks = 46.26 divided by 5 days = 9.252 children per creche per day).

I bet “Non Parent” is a bloke. Only a guy could come out with something that stupid.

This post shows that nothing ever seems to change in this world – women and motherhood are still undervalued.

I’m glad that you made this story your main feature today, “Edinburgh Sucks”, but you could have included a wee bit more of a gender analysis. You wrote mainly about “parents” and “creche staff”, which are very gender neutral terms, given that the vast majority of people being shafted here are women.

I also bet that there’s not all that many women going to that bloody Ratho Climbing Centre.

Is it not a parent’s responsibility to look after their children? Why do people keep moaning when facilities are closed or suspended?

nothing on Edinburgh Leisure website about the closings.

It does say…

“Our crÃ¨ches welcome babies to pre school children. Booking is recommended since the service is popular and consistently recommended to others by our customers; many of whom return with their second, third and fourth child! You can book up to seven days in advance with one of our leisure cards.”

not sure if jambo jim is correct in his numbers but the creche at portobello is always full and you have to telephone a week in advance for a place most of the time.

the creche is a single room about 6×4 metres or smaller and is obviously well used. i’d join edinburghsucks campaign to keep them open.
