They actually surveyed the public about it. The public told them no. Guess what, screw the public, we’re in charge, we’ll just do it.
TRANSPORT bosses are to push on with plans to introduce a bike sharing scheme in the Capital, despite a survey failing to find public support for the project.
First mistake they made was comparing Edinburgh to Barcelona or Lyon. If they had gone back a few years and compared Edinburgh to Amsterdam which has a similar climate they would have found that Amsterdam did it. Everyone in that city rides bikes – but when the Amsterdam Gemeente happily supplied their citizens with beautiful new white bicycles – the citizens promptly stole them and painted them a huge variety of colours.
Conservative leader (just, by the skin of his teeth and his own vote) Iain Whyte who originally had the hair brained idea came out of his sack to suggest that it could be paid by advertising. We can just see it now – Pfizer putting ads on the cross bar with a 50cm ruler and the phrase “You’re willy will be this big when you use Viagra.” At least he had the chukkies to admit “The report is not ultra positive” although that is a bit of an understatement.
The ignoramus quote of the day goes to Councillor “on time and on budget” Wheeler who has obviously lifted it from some green blog somewhere in middle America. We won’t bother wasting bandwidth by putting it here. If you want to read it then head over to the link below.
Interestingly, the Evening Chip Paper does not allow comments on the story, they must have been warned to keep comments away with the threat of removal of council advertising revenue. You can comment below.

The one thing this story shows us is never to allow the stupid councillors out of Edinbirgh cos they are sure to come back with some hairbrained 25% thought out scheme.
White is completely hated by everyone in the council offices. All departments and all levels.
People wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
My first attempt to comment was bounced for some rewason.
Check the web – the Velib scheme in Paris is an expensive failure and the commercial sponsor is desperate to get out. Half the bikes were nicked or vandalised. Does anyone think it would be different here?
